Figure 5. Geomorphic map showing surfaces of Birch Springs Alluvial Fan and glacial deposits from glaciers that just reached the fan. Qaf indicates Quaternary alluvial fan deposit. Dots and numbers show locations and site numbers where OSL samples were collected. The majority of the fan area is 10-60 ka in age, with only a small portion 0-10 ka in age. While the contributing basin of this alluvial fan was heavily glaciated during the late Pleistocene, the same is not true for other LRR fans though they were formed at a similar time. This suggests that mechanisms besides just glaciers can create and move large amounts of sediment for deposition on fans.
