Figure 2. A rechargeable battery is a useful analogy for understanding how luminescence dating works. When mineral grains are exposed to light or heated, trapped electrons that accumulated during burial are released, similar to depleting a battery. When the grains are deposited and buried, electrons begin to build up again, much like a battery would be recharged. In the laboratory, the minerals are stimulated and release a luminescence signal, which can be related to the amount of energy it received during burial, and thus the amount of time since it has been buried. (Rhodes, 2011)
