Photograph of the basal ice zone of Suess Glacier (-17°C) showing stratified basal ice that has formed as layers and lenses of sand from the bed have been eroded from the substrate and subsequently deformed. When excavated 4 years prior to this photograph being taken the walls of the tunnel were vertical as was the line of pegs in the background. The avearge velocity of the ice 4 m above the bed was 250 mm/yr.
