Mary Huber
Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching
Mary Taylor Huber is a senior scholar with the Bay View Alliance, a network of nine research universities in the US and Canada exploring what leadership can do to improve teaching and learning in higher education. She is also senior scholar emerita at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Involved in research at Carnegie since 1985, Huber directed a program on Cultures of Teaching Higher Education, led the Integrative Learning Project, and worked closely with the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. She also provided leadership for Carnegie's role in the US Professors of the Year award and served on the advisory committee for the Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education.
Huber speaks, consults, and writes on the scholarship of teaching and learning, on integrative learning, and on faculty faculty roles and rewards. Coauthor of the well-known Carnegie report Scholarship Assessed: Evaluation of the Professoriate (1997), related books include Disciplinary Styles in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (2002); Balancing Acts: The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Academic Careers (2004); The Advancement of Learning: Building the Teaching Commons (2005); and The Scholarship of teaching and Learning Reconsidered: Institutional Integration and Impact (2011).
Huber serves as series editor for the Indiana University Press's series on Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, as U.S. editor for the journal Arts and Humanities in Higher Education, and writes the book review essays that appear three times a year in Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning. A cultural anthropologist, she has also written books and essays on colonial institutions and cultures in Papua New Guinea. She holds a doctorate in anthropology from the University of Pittsburgh.
