Determining the 100-year floodplain of the Chippewa River part of Cutting Edge:Introductory Courses:Activities
In this in-class activity recurrence intervals are calculated for ten flooding events on the Chippewa River near Eau Claire Wisconsin. The students use 1:24000 topographic maps to determine the extent of the 100-year flood plain near Eau Claire and on campus.
Wastewater Treatment part of Cutting Edge:Introductory Courses:Activities
This activity involves a tour of the local waste water treatment plant, where the students learn about the waste water treatment process. Following the tour the students write up a paper describing the water's path from residential housing, through the treatment plant until discharge into the local river. This activity links the everyday activities of students to course material.
Environmental Geology part of Cutting Edge:Introductory Courses:Courses
This is an introductory level geology course focusing on various aspects of geology that touch people lives, such as earth resources issues and geological hazards. The course includes a lab and field trips. Discussion sessions are included as a part of the lectures.
