Purpose: David Ignat '63 has endowed a student scientific research program to provide support for students pursuing research projects during summer or winter breaks. A broad program for undergraduates in the physical and mathematical sciences appealed to Ignat, whose career has largely been spent in the field of plasma physics research. Ignat established the fund in honor of his past mentors in the physics department at Carleton, Robert J. Kolenkow and Robert A. Reitz. One goal is to expand the opportunities for research beyond the campus to research universities, including areas that are not always well represented at an undergraduate college.

Funding: Each year approximately twenty students in the natural sciences and mathematics are supported during the winter and summer breaks. For winter break work, funding for each student will not exceed $1500. For summer break work, funding for each student will not exceed $4200. The award funds the student's stipend and expenses for travel, lodging, and/or meals.

Deadline:
  • October 15 by 5 pm for winter break work.
  • February 5 for summer break work.

Eligibility:
  • Only students studying the natural sciences and mathematics are eligible.
  • Available to students regardless of gender, ethnicity, U.S. citizenship, financial state, or academic stage.
  • This student application process is to be used for off campus research experiences only.

Selection Criteria: Proposals will be evaluated on the quality of the project and the role the student will play in the project. Consideration will also be given to how the student and the project will benefit from the student's involvement. Preference is given to students earlier in their college careers with high GPAs.

Contacts: Mary Drew x4383 or mdrew@carleton.edu
The Science and Math Steering Board will deliberate on these proposals and make awards.

Application Process: Interested students should fill out the application form completely and submit before the due date.
