Santiago Canyon College Presentation Comments

Neat! I liked the focus on SLOs. That is really a place I have not seen so many folks go to.

Cindy, given what you have seen from Earth Science, what would you like to look at in Physics? Is there any data you would like to look at? Are there things you think you might like to work on?

Your goals are stated very clearly, and I find the desire to track transfer success very interesting, and one I'd like to take a closer look at. We have been able to set up a couple of programs that are pathways to transfer to 4YC institutions and they do give us occasional reports on our students. Is that something you can look at?

Wow - that is great to have that many geo/earth science majors. And interesting challenge to build/rebuild the program/courses - who knew that a name change could have such a impact. Neat to have the SLO data and to plan on tracking it for the future.

I wondered if you had success data by demographics.

Thanks

We participated in a transfer panel (arranged by a previous SAGE Cohort - Kristie Bradford and Bryn Benford at Lone Star College). It was geology department chairs/faculty from 4 or 5 of the main schools that students transfer too and one CC Geology alum who had transferred and had continued all the way along to a masters. It was a very valuable discussion for all of us - both CC and transfer. We really talked about the sticking points that led transfer students to struggle at the 4 years, some events we could do to foster interest, etc. You might consider a panel or working group like this with some of the other institutions that your students commonly transfer to.

From Melanie:
A very interesting presentation with solid data analysis.

In your analysis does the time domain include summer enrollment?

A thought: Reviving the oceanography course may well increase enrollment because CA is ocean oriented. In my experience students in coastal areas are very interested in courses in oceanography because it is part of their living environment.
