Yakima Valley Community College Presentation Comments

I like the way you chose to look at your data - sometimes finding the correct data to evaluate is the main struggle! You all did a great job of looking for the data that you would need to find and answer questions.
I was wondering if you know what was different in 2014 that in both courses, the Latinx population actually did better than the white students.

This was an interesting presentation! I'm glad you found that your success rates were better than expected for LatinX students.

Just to clarify, the ASTR course that saw decreased success recently is online/hybrid? Or the GEOL course is online? Also, does the ASTR course have a lab? (I apologize, because I know you went over this, but I missed it in my notes). I'm trying to determine which courses will have more active learning and if the challenge will be adding active learning to online courses, as that is what I have been struggling with recently.

What are some active learning/metacognitive techniques you would like to add?

I think no matter what you implement, your courses already have very high success rates so you are doing a great job! :)

A couple of rather specific thoughts... 1) Highline is much bigger but we too were unable to offer Historical. I feel your pain. We did split Geo 101 into 2 classes, and have had more success with getting students to take both of those.

Your examination of racial and ethnic data was terrific, but did not find a lot. You might consider also looking at age and socioeconomic data. It might be more helpful.

Great plan in cooperating more meta cognition.
I have a few questions: 1. Does your AS 1 track have geology sequence as an option- we currently have bio or physics and geology as electives. 2. Do you think your data could be a reflection of who was teaching the classes. I know you said you are all fairly new to the college.
I also want to comment on the Historical I have had this discussion with Hillary already but you can easily remove the prerec and still make it work.

It is interesting how there seems a decrease in student success but as you said, it could just be because the data is incomplete for this year.

Was there any changes to instruction - professors, book, homework platform - during this time?

Interesting data and great to have the different courses/programs to see similiarities and differences. I was thinking you might have some differences if you looked at the online vs face to face or hybrid (especially given that so many of the astronomy courses are online) so I'm was surprised that your data didn't suggest differences. Great that you are planning to use the active learning and metacognitive strategies. I mentioned this to the other group - On the SAGE 2YC website there are some resources on supoorting English Language Learners that might be useful.

Thanks!

I would take Geology of the Pacific Northwest! That sounds awesome!

In 2014/2015 the ASTRO100 success rates for Hispanics were much higher than for all students (and then as you point out are lower every other year). Was this a low enrollment effect? Was there something different about that year?

I think it is great that you institution recognizes its student population on focuses on serving the Latin X population.

It could be interesting so investigate other parameters in your student population (gender, income, age. etc.)
