Leeward Community College Presentation Comments
I think you not looking at the ethnicity/race data was a GREAT choice given your setting. I wonder about looking at other breakdowns (like Pell eligibility, age, disability status, etc). Your instructional research office might be able to help think about what other data might be available and helpful!
It is great that you all chose to focus on gender demographics for your institution because of the difficulty of breaking down the ethnicity data.
What career focus do the native Hawaiian students have at Leeward CC? Do you have advertising for STEM at your institution?

Disability is a good point. I've had a few students with disabilities in my OCN 201 class, but it didn't occur to me to pull this data.

I think it is really cool that you have such a diverse student body. Also, the decrease for Leeward, in general, was 13% but for the STEM students was only around 6% - yeah I did the math.
Is there anything that you are all are doing to reduce the decrease compared to the rest of the college?

Interesting data and great to have the three different yet related programs and that you can work together as a team. I wondered if you might add metacognitive strategies to your place-based and multi-disciplinary approach. And also wondered about working with the veterans/military support system on campus? Great to see the slides of your locality?
Thanks
Thanks

I found your discussion about the challenges of categorizing students by ethnicity thought provoking. It is making me think about how our institution collects and categorizes that data. Can our students select more than one option? How are those students classified if they do? Your presentation made me realize that we are analyzing all of this data in an attempt to characterize our classes, yet I have very little understanding of how that data is collected and processed. Thanks for highlighting this.
A question would be that I am interested in learning more about your physical science major. What sorts of classes does that require and what do you find students who complete it typically go on to study at a 4YC?

Awesome last slide! Also, I can totally see why so many students are interested in the oceanography class. I want to take that class! I'm still fairly new to teaching, so others may know this one, but what is place-based learning?

Your idea for place-based learning is fabulous! I attended a multidisciplinary workshop when I first moved to Washington State to help me understand the history and details about the local environment. Finding such a workshop (or perchance designing one for faculty?) might be valuable.
I find it interesting that Chem lab is optional for engineering...

I love the name of the Science of the Sea. I want to take your class.
I have a similar issue with my geology classes being taken for distribution.
I have a question for Luca- Why don't the Engineering students have to take the chem lab? Do you feel they are missing out on some content because of that?
I think it would be interesting to pull data from the lower level bio classes to see if its also reflects a larger number of females as well.

Yes, they do miss out on important content. I think that the main reason is the max number of credit hours we can have in the program
