Anne Arundel Community College Presentation Comments

I really liked the way you represented the equity gap in your presentation!

Given the interest in the Earth Sciences at your institution, have you ever considered creating a majors course in oceanography, perhaps one with a lab component?

Thanks for your presentation! Having reviewed similar data, your equity gaps are definitely not as alarming as some other schools. I think it is really smart to leverage your location in career development and internships for your students. Question: Do equity gaps exist for your learning outcomes as well?

I like how you showed the equity gap, that made it crystal clear where attention can be focused.

One question I have, would including common questions in regular exams (maybe just 2-4 questions)in all sections to hit some of those course level outcomes help get a different grasp on how the students are handling the information at the time of receiving vs the end of the semester?

I thought your looking at the outcomes from the beginning of the course and end of the course was really neat.

it's great that you have a focus on a course that has so many sections and is so popular with your students. Lots of good ideas for what to do.

I wonder what specifically you're planning to do re adding student engagement and equity - are each of you doing different things or all focusing on a small set of strategies?

Also, great to include speakers - in the virtual setting that we're in at the moment,
might be able to take advantage of that - if students will come?

I wonder about the disparity between genders in your program when there is no disparity based on gender in oceanography. Why do you think that is?

I think it's great that you have an established Earth Science Club and will use that as a resource for sharing information. Additionally, establishing internships and coordinating service learning can be challenging, so that's a really positive aspect.

As far as a question, within your Oceanography courses, do you ever do any sort of experiments … like water density or basic chem? I know it's not a lab course but those sorts of hands-on experiences helped my students learn and care more about those less "fun" parts of Oceanography. I was lucky enough to teach the course in a lab room, not a lecture hall.

I really appreciate incorporation of the equity gap graphic in your data. It's great to be able to see the differences in such a clear way.

It was interesting that you stated the 'most interesting' information in the course is presented at the end of the semester; the biology side of things is likely more familiar to the students as well. The students may also remember that information better because it is more fresh in their brains, too. Perhaps a retest of students a semester later (if you can track them that long) would produce different results.

I like your plans for increasing student opportunities for internships/exposure to jobs in Geosciences. Having something concrete to understand the 'why we have to learn things' is valuable.

Pete Berquist, who is one of the team leaders got a boat for his program, as I recall. You might want to ask him about that.
