This National Geographic article discusses the probable intellectual link between biodiversity and ecosystem biology first made by Darwin. The study of ecosystems ecology has a long history, but the explicit link between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning is only about 10 years old. The author concludes that many of the questions in ecology and evolution can be traced back to Darwin's writings.
