Choose Your Sessions for the NSF Visit

If you will be going on the visit to NSF, complete the following form by June 1. Be sure to hit the SUBMIT button before leaving this page or your information will be lost.

Important: please read!
Going to NSF is a great opportunity! To make the most of your visit, here is what we recommend:
  1. Choose a small group session for the morning. You can only go to one.
  2. We recommend that you meet with a program officer. See the section on individual meetings, below, for details.
  3. In the form below, you will be asked to choose your top two choices for the concurrent sessions. If it's possible, we will schedule individual meetings around these sessions (and so should you), but if that's not possible, it's usually better (more valuable to you) to meet with a program director than to attend the concurrent sessions. It is permissible to come late or leave early in the concurrent sessions, since the program directors realize that some of you may need to keep individual appointments.
  4. Meet with another program director, if your research does not easily fall into just one program.
To the extent that we schedule your day, these are the priorities that we will follow. We will notify you in June or early July of what appointments we have made for you. We do not recommend that you attempt to make appointments on your own, given that our group is large enough that we overwhelm the program officers with appointments on this day. We do the best we can to make appointments for you based upon how you fill out this form. If you have a compelling reason for having different priorities, please let us know that in the box for additional comments or questions at the bottom of this form.

Small Group Meetings
10:45-11:45 am Concurrent Sessions
In the morning you will have the opportunity to attend one, and only one, small disciplinary group meeting with a program director (e.g., tectonics, hydrologic sciences, and so forth). All of these sessions happen simultaneously, so it is not possible to attend more than one. Please select the program you would like to attend. If your discipline is not listed, then please select "Other" and write in your program area preference or other comments in the space provided.

Additional Programs and OpportunitiesThroughout the day we will offer optional sessions on various programs at NSF and also will schedule some individual meetings with selected program directors. Some of the small group sessions are concurrent, and the individual meetings will take place during the sessions, so you will have to prioritize your meeting preferences. Please let us know your program session priorities below and we will work to accommodate these, when possible, in scheduling individual meetings. If we are unable to avoid a conflict with your top choices of concurrent sessions, you will have the option of going to other concurrent sessions instead.

Individual Meetings
If you have an idea for a proposal, we recommend that you meet with the appropriate program director to discuss your idea and get some feedback about it. This is part of the program directors' jobs, and it is something that they generally enjoy. Your idea does not need to be fully fleshed out, but you should be able to articulate the problem or question you want to study, why it is important, and some thoughts about how you will approach it, so that you can have a meaningful and productive conversation with them.

If you wish to meet individually with one of the directors of the programs listed below, please select the program from the list. Because we anticipate that several of you will want to meet with each of these directors, we will make your appointment for you, avoiding conflicts with your other choices to the best of our abilities. We will aim to have your individual meetings scheduled by June 30 (provided that you complete this form by June 1). If we are scheduling an individual appointment for you, please wait until after that to schedule any appointments with additional program directors.

Some of you may want to meet directors in other programs. If that is the case, you will need to make your own appointments. Read the NSF website to identify the appropriate programs and find the contact information for those directors. We strongly recommend that you make those appointments for the afternoon, unless there is no small group meeting that you want to attend in the morning. In particular, please do not schedule any individual meetings during the morning welcome session (10:15-10:45).

If you are interested in discussing the CAREER program and would submit your proposal to a program in the Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences (AGS) or Earth Sciences (EAR) division, you would meet with the relevant disciplinary program director. If you would submit your proposal to the Ocean Sciences Division (OCE), you would meet with the relevant disciplinary program director and with someone in the Ocean education program.
