Background Information

Ann Velenchik is Associate Professor of Economics at Wellesley College, where she has also served as department chair and as director of the International Relations Program. She earned her Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University in 1989.

Ann began using the Case Method, and a variety of other Active Learning approaches, after completing the Pew Faculty Fellowship in International Affairs in the summer of 1991. Since that time she has been spreading the word about the advantages of this method to other economists through workshops and conferences throughout North America, including returning to the Pew program as an instructor in several subsequent summers. Her approach to using cases in the Economics classroom has been presented in publications in the Journal of Economic Education and elsewhere. Her empirical research on labor market issues in Africa has been published in Journal of Development Economics, World Development and World Bank Economic Review among other places.

Related Pedagogical Projects

On July 1, 2009, Ann will become the Director of the Writing Program at Wellesley College. This required program for first year students is based on a Writing Across the Curriculum approach, and Ann's mandate is to incorporate more quantitative disciplines into the program and expand our capacity for teaching students to write about numbers.
