Workshop Details

The program will begin on Wednesday, August 1st, at 4 pm at IslandWood and will conclude on Friday, August 3rd at 2 pm.

All applicants that have been accepted to this workshop will be added to a workshop participant email list. The email list will be used by the conveners and support staff to send additional information about the workshop program and logistics.

Each participant will need a laptop computer during the workshop. Please let us know when you register if you are unable to bring your own laptop.

Travel

Participants are responsible for their travel to and from the workshop, though we ask you to fill out a travel information form once you have made arrangements. IslandWood provides comprehensive directions for getting there, but we are providing some additional information that includes the timing of our workshop.

Ferry

Note that travel to Bainbridge Island requires a ferry; and participants should plan their travel to accommodate the Seattle-Bainbridge ferry schedule (note that they will be on their summer schedule). The ferry crossing takes about 35 minutes and it is a 15-minute drive from the ferry terminal to IslandWood, so take that into consideration when you plan your ferry crossing. The last possible ferry you can take to arrive on time leaves Seattle at 3:00 pm.

Travel by Air

For those who need to fly in, SeaTac is the nearest airport. We recommend arriving no later than 12:00 noon on Wednesday, August 1, and departing after 5:00 pm on Friday, August 3, in order to allow for travel time to and from the airport.

To get to IslandWood from SeaTac, participants can:

  • Take the Link light rail from SeaTac to the Pioneer Square station and walk two blocks to the ferry terminal; light rail trains run every 6-10 minutes depending on the time of day and take about 35 minutes. From the ferry terminal on Bainbridge Island, Kitsap Transit Route #98 and Route #97 buses stop in the vicinity of IslandWood. (IslandWood is located on the east side of Blakely Avenue, south of the Baker Hill junction and Blakely Elementary School.) Uber and Lyft have some availability on the island, and we will also try to coordinate ride-sharing with those who are driving once we have everyone's travel information.
  • Rent a car at SeaTac and drive to Bainbridge Island.

For those that do need to fly, we anticipate being able to reimburse your flight up to $350; please retain your receipt and record of your purchase.

Travel by Car

We anticipate that many participants will be traveling by car. As noted above, IslandWood provides comprehensive directions for getting there. Note that travel to Bainbridge Island requires a ferry; participants should plan their travel to accommodate the Seattle-Bainbridge ferry schedule. The ferry crossing takes about 35 minutes and is a 15-minute drive from the ferry terminal to IslandWood, so take that into consideration when you plan your ferry crossing.

Accommodations

All participants will be housed in double accommodations at IslandWood unless otherwise requested and paid for. If you are among those who requested a single room upgrade, you must submit advance payment for this upgrade. The cost of the upgrade to a single room is $100 ($50 per night).

Accommodations are in a Northwest-style lodge; each room has a private bath and has a window above each bed that invites in the natural setting. Lodges also feature a spacious great room, complete with a fireplace and comfortable gathering space. The entire IslandWood campus has free wireless internet access.
