Workshop Program

Improving Student Success and Broadening Participation of Underrepresented Minorities in the Geosciences

Texas Spring 2018 Regional SAGE 2YC Workshop Program:

Friday, February 2, 2018

8:00 - 8:45 Registration and light breakfast

8:45 - 9:00 Introduction to workshop goals with introductions of leaders and participants

  • Leaders of workshop are part of SAGE 2YC. Our goals are:
    • Supporting academic success of all students in geoscience
    • Facilitating students' professional pathways (workforce, transfer)
    • Broadening participation in geoscience

Today's workshop will focus on the first and third goals.

9:00 - 10:30 Backwards design: Assessing what you want students to know and be able to do

What do you want students to know and be able to do after completing your course? We will discuss the 'enduring understandings' of geoscience that you want your students to be able to use after your course. We will explore different types of formative and summative assessment that can help students practice and demonstrate their understanding.

10:30 - 10:45 Break

10:45 - 11:30 Observing and analyzing data of minority groups in our classes

11:30- 3:00 - Diversity in action: Broadening participation through strategies for inclusion

The geosciences are tied with physics for the least diverse field in the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). We'll examine issues of equity, access, and inclusion through the lens of case studies, then explore strategies for broadening participation via a gallery walk and discussion.

11:30 - 11:35 Short Introduction

11:35 - 11:55 Scenario Group Discussions

11:55 - 12:15 What does research tell us about issues related to diversity in STEM?

12:15 - 1:15 Break - Lunch and Continuing Discussion
1:15 - 2:15 Guest Speaker: Kenyatta Phelps, Associate Professor of Sociology, Lone Star - University Park

2:15 - 3:00 Diversity Strategy Gallery Walk

3:00 - 3:25 Wrap-up and Discussion: What big ideas did you get from the workshop?

3:25 - 3:50 Action Plans: How can you use what you learned to develop action plans for the next semester?

3:50 - 4:00 Workshop evaluation
