Overview and Logistics

This free one-day workshop is designed to bring regional 2YC geoscience faculty together so that we may collaborate on active learning and metacognition practices to improve student success. This workshop will include presentations, group discussions and opportunities for collaboration among the participants.

Workshop Goals

This workshop is intended to facilitate better collaboration amongst the two-year college faculty in the Geosciences and allow for sharing ideas on improving instruction

  1. To begin the base network of local 2-year college faculty in the San Francisco Bay Area.
  2. To introduce and reinforce innovative and evidence-based best practices in instruction to faculty in 2-year college departments in the San Francisco Bay Area.
  3. Promote the development of innovative practices and engage faculty at the workshop in disseminating their own work.

Date and times

The workshop will take place on Saturday October 22nd, starting at 9:00 am and ending at 4:30 pm. It will be held at De Anza College in Room S44.

Expectations

Workshop participants are expected to:

  • Before the workshop: Pull together some of your best activities or approaches using active learning to share at the workshop.
  • During the workshop: Participate in all sessions, develop an action plan for your own college, and complete the end of workshop evaluation survey.
  • After the workshop: Beyond developing the broader network discussed in the workshop, participants will be asked to complete a post-workshop survey later in the academic year.

Cost

This workshop is free to participants, thanks to funding from the National Science Foundation.

Registration

The workshop is open to all community college faculty in the San Francisco Bay Area, including Full and Part-time faculty. The workshop is limited to 20 participants. Should there be more registrants than 20 others will be put on wait list.

We will be meeting in S44. The best available parking will be located in Parking Lot E. See campus map: http://www.deanza.edu/map/ Do not pay for parking. Parking passes will be provided the day of the workshop.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided. If you have dietary restrictions or preferences, please notify us when you register for the workshop.
