Soils module extension activity — Images as data

Courses in science, science methods, and social studies regularly use mounted images as a method of conveying data. Below are sets of large images that can be printed and mounted for classroom use. Ways to use these images include:

  • Label the images and make them available in the classroom as examples. Bring them to the class's attention when relevant.
  • Ask individual or small groups of students to title, list what they observe, and list their inferences as to the cause of the phenomena or the results of the activity shown in each image. Students may then write or draw a scenario that includes cause and effect and/or a timeline of events related to the phenomena or activity. This could be done as a formative assessment and instructional activity and/or as a summative assessment after students have learned about the processes shown in the images.
