Vignettes are stand-alone, illustrated electronic case studies that teach about geomorphology, surface processes, and/or Quaternary history. Vignettes can be used alone or in combination with the "Key Concepts in Geomorphology", the first in a new generation of textbooks. Vignettes allow faculty to customize the learning resources they offer students to enrich and personalize student learning experiences.

Glacier lake outburst cascades and backwater lake formations in the Hindukush Mountains
Lasafam Iturrizaga
Glacier lake outburst floods in the Hindukush-Karakoram Mountains are among the most important types of current geomorphological processes below an altitude of 4500 m. Since 1826, at least 35 glacier lake ...

Long-term Coastline Evolution under Anthropogenic Impacts in the Bay of Varna (Bulgarian Black Sea Coast)
Atanas Palazov
The Bulgarian Black Sea coast is 412 km long (Stanchev, 2009) and embraces the territory between cape Sivriburun (the border with Romania) on the North and Rezovska River mouth (the border with Turkey) on the South ...

Flood-prone Low-lying Territories along the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast
Atanas Palazov
Over recent decades the increased frequency of natural hazards resulting from global climate change has become one of the most severe problems affecting sustainability of costal zones. In particular, low-lying ...

Cosmogenic nuclide inventories of river sediments reveal the geomorphic character of their source areas
Alexandru T Codilean
The realization that surface processes can play a key role in moderating tectonics, and possibly climate (Molnar & England, 1990; Raymo & Ruddiman, 1992; see also Bishop 2007) has meant that there is now a ...

Quantifying rates of erosion in Namibia using cosmogenic nuclides
Alexandru T Codilean
Quantifying rates of erosion on millennial timescales is fundamental to understanding the processes that shape the Earth's surface. Cosmogenic nuclide analysis is probably the most suitable technique for this ...

The Largest Landslides on Earth
Oliver Korup
In landscape evolution, landslides are thought to play a prime role in controlling hillslope erosional response to tectonic, climatic, and anthropogenic forcing (e.g. Korup et al., 2007; Hewitt et al., 2008). ...

The Enigma of Inner Gorges in the Alps
Oliver Korup
Inner gorges form at the interface between hillslopes and river channels. Seen in cross section, they form an often near-symmetrical convex break the steepness of the hillslope profiles. This distinctive ...

Impact of deforestation on slope stability
veerle vanacker
Slope movement is a widespread hazard in mountainous regions around the world. Consequently, not only considerable financial costs are suffered, but also major ecological and environmental problems arise in a ...

Geophysical prospecting on a complex rock glacier in the semi-arid Andes of Argentinia (Morenas Coloradas, Mendoza, Argentina)
Jan-Christoph Otto
In the semi-arid high Andes of Argentina and Chile, rock glaciers are more frequent than glaciers. Rock glaciers are periglacial landforms composed of rock, ice, water and air formed by creeping debris on sloped ...

Landslide susceptibility in cuesta scarps of SW-Germany (Swabian Alb)
Birgit Terhorst
Keywords. GIS-based hazard modelling, slope stability, Hirschkopf landslide, landscape evolution, natural hazards. Damage to settlements and infrastructure as well as human casualties caused by landslides are ...
