Vignettes

Vignettes are stand-alone, illustrated electronic case studies that teach about geomorphology, surface processes, and/or Quaternary history. Vignettes can be used alone or in combination with the "Key Concepts in Geomorphology", the first in a new generation of textbooks. Vignettes allow faculty to customize the learning resources they offer students to enrich and personalize student learning experiences.

Where did the river mouth go?
Ana Vila Concejo
If you lived on Winda Woppa peninsula, in a house with a boat shed by the river bank, and only used your boat every few years, it is likely that you would have to travel further and further every time you wanted to ...

Why is there a sandwave and why is it not there all the time?
Ana Vila Concejo
It is widely known that beaches erode because of the effect of storms. However, this is not always the case; this vignette presents an area that seems to grow the most when affected by severe storms. For this ...

Tidal Currents in a Microtidal Estuary - Port Stephens, Australia
Timothy Austin
Port Stephens is a popular tourist destination located on the mid-north New South Wales (NSW) coast, 230 km north of Sydney, Australia (Figure 1). Despite the regions popularity, it is not protected from the ...

Understanding soil erosion and landscape evolution using computer based predictive models
Greg Hancock
The ability to measure and model soil erosion and resultant landscape evolution is important because soil erosion has a range of environmental impacts, including loss of organic matter and nutrients, reduction of ...

Reconstructing the geomorphic history of a cave: a case study from Liang Bua, Indonesia
Kira Westaway
Liang Bua, a large cave situated 16 km from Ruteng in western Flores, Indonesia (Figure 1), was formed as a subterranean chamber over 600 ka. From this time to the present, a series of geomorphic events influenced ...

Establishing cave exposure using evidence from river deposits: a case study from Liang Bua, Indonesia
Kira Westaway
Liang Bua, in western Flores, Indonesia (Figure 1) is a large limestone chamber with a wide entrance and a cathedral-like atmosphere. It's name, meaning 'cool cave' explains its attraction as an ...

(Sediment) Accounting 101: An Example
Chuck Podolak
I. Introduction Rivers transport both water and sediment [rock fragments such as sand and gravel] from hillsides to the oceans. As sediment moves downstream it creates river bars, accumulates into floodplains, and ...

Glacier Fluctuations Since the Last Glacial Maximum in Southwest Alaska
Jonathan Harvey
Glacier fluctuations since the last glacial maximum in southwest Alaska Introduction During the last glacial maximum (LGM), alpine glaciers in the western cordillera expanded, coalesced, and flowed onto ...

Coastal Geomorphology and Policy Applications along Southern Monterey Bay, California
Douglas Smith
Introduction Global sea level stood between 100 m and 130 m lower than today's sea level 18,000 years ago at the peak of the latest ice age. Since that time, melting ice and thermally expanding oceans have ...

Marine Geomorphology: Geomorphic Processes, Hazards, and Paradoxes in Monterey Canyon
Douglas Smith
Introduction While traditional geomorphic studies focus on the geologic processes and products that shape our terrestrial topography, there are equally exciting opportunities to explore the other 71% of the planet ...
