Vignettes

Vignettes are stand-alone, illustrated electronic case studies that teach about geomorphology, surface processes, and/or Quaternary history. Vignettes can be used alone or in combination with the "Key Concepts in Geomorphology", the first in a new generation of textbooks. Vignettes allow faculty to customize the learning resources they offer students to enrich and personalize student learning experiences.

The influence of weathering and soils on the geomorphic expression of tectonic landforms: an exception to a rule of tectonic geomorphology
Martha Eppes
Background Blind Thrust Faults and Seismic Hazard In southern California, one of the most tectonically active regions of the United States, it is critical to understand the potential earthquake hazard that ...

Late Quaternary Tectonics and Basin Inversion: a case from the Lower Narmada valley, India
Laxman Chamyal
The Indian Plate is currently moving northeast at 5 cm/yr (2 in/yr), while the Eurasian Plate is moving northeast at only 2 cm/yr (0.8 in/yr). This is causing the Eurasian Plate to deform, and the Indian Plate to ...

The continental dunefield of Australia
Paul Hesse
Dunefields cover a large portion of the Australian continent in areas with favourable topography, climate and sand supply. The main areas of dunes lie in a diagonal band across the continent from the Mallee ...

Regional trends in desert dune morphology and orientation: Examples from the Australian deserts
Kathryn Fitzsimmons
Dunes are the major landforms within the desert regions of the world, owing largely to the dominance of wind over water as a geomorphic agent in the arid zone. Linear dunes, which form parallel to the resultant ...

Linear dune formation: Longitudinal elongation or local wind rifting? An example from the Strzelecki Desert, central Australia
Kathryn Fitzsimmons
The Australian desert dunefields are dominated by linear dunes, which form a large anti-clockwise whorl across more than one third of the continent (Wasson et al., 1988). Despite being so extensive, the mechanisms ...

Erodibility, tensile strength, and the "k" problem in Grand kanyon
Natalie Bursztyn, Utah State University
River profile shape is an important indicator of the geomorphic processes and history that contributed to its modern form. In the case of bedrock streams during episodes of incision, resistance of river-level ...

Sinkhole hazard above salt, Dead Sea shore
amos frumkin
The hazard of sinkholes (collapse dolines) is commonly associated with karst (landscapes dominated by dissolution and subsurface drainage), where subsurface cavities undermine the overlying strata, causing ...

Salt Karst: Mount Sedom diapir
amos frumkin
A unique, rapidly evolving karst landscape is described below. It develops on salt rock (halite) at such a rate that a human lifetime is enough to observe considerable geomorphic variations. Halite is the most ...
