Vignettes

Vignettes are stand-alone, illustrated electronic case studies that teach about geomorphology, surface processes, and/or Quaternary history. Vignettes can be used alone or in combination with the "Key Concepts in Geomorphology", the first in a new generation of textbooks. Vignettes allow faculty to customize the learning resources they offer students to enrich and personalize student learning experiences.

Soils, relict landscapes and paleoclimate in the Atacama Desert, Chile
Jason Rech, Miami University-Oxford
The exceptionally dry Atacama Desert, adjacent to the Central Andes in northern Chile, contains many relict landscapes (landscapes formed in the past, but preserved on the present surface; Figure 1). One remarkable ...

The influence of volcanism on Andean Rivers
Scott Hynek
The Andean Cordillera spans more than 60° of latitude along the western margin of the South American continent. The climate, tectonics, and morphology of the range are known to vary considerably and predictably ...

Surficial carbonate and land surfaces of the Pamir Plateau, Tajikistan
Scott Hynek
The Pamir plateau is a prominent physiographic feature in Central Asia (Figure 1). The geomorphology of the plateau interior is a result of its geologic setting and its climate. The Pamir plateau is surrounded by ...

Geomorphic Setting & Archaeology of the Cunene River, Namibia
Kathleen Nicoll, University of Utah
Introduction This vignette presents a virtual tour of the Cunene River, and a prehistoric archaeological site located on a fluvial terrace in northern Namibia. Today the Cunene River is an important transnational ...

Luminescence dating used to reconstruct fault slip rates in the Mojave Desert, California
Belinda Roder
The Mojave Desert, California, is crossed by a number of major active fault systems that have played an important role in this region's landscape development and represent a significant seismic hazard to ...

Floodplain chronology of the Stillerust Vlei, Mooi River floodplain wetland, in western KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Amanda Keen-Zebert
Wetlands have become a focus of conservation efforts worldwide following the international Ramsar Convention (The Convention on Wetlands of International Importance) established in 1971. Wetlands are areas where ...

The influence of weathering and soils on the geomorphic expression of tectonic landforms: an exception to a rule of tectonic geomorphology
Martha Eppes
Background Blind Thrust Faults and Seismic Hazard In southern California, one of the most tectonically active regions of the United States, it is critical to understand the potential earthquake hazard that ...

Erodibility, tensile strength, and the "k" problem in Grand kanyon
Natalie Bursztyn, Utah State University
River profile shape is an important indicator of the geomorphic processes and history that contributed to its modern form. In the case of bedrock streams during episodes of incision, resistance of river-level ...

The Kern River, California: A Story of Uplift, Incision, and Flood Control
Natalie Bursztyn, Utah State University
Within Kern County, the present day Kern River is an example of two distinct river environments. In the Sierra Nevada, the Kern River is in a classic V-shaped canyon (Fig. 1) as it erodes towards base level. In ...

Sinkhole hazard above salt, Dead Sea shore
amos frumkin
The hazard of sinkholes (collapse dolines) is commonly associated with karst (landscapes dominated by dissolution and subsurface drainage), where subsurface cavities undermine the overlying strata, causing ...
