Vignettes

Vignettes are stand-alone, illustrated electronic case studies that teach about geomorphology, surface processes, and/or Quaternary history. Vignettes can be used alone or in combination with the "Key Concepts in Geomorphology", the first in a new generation of textbooks. Vignettes allow faculty to customize the learning resources they offer students to enrich and personalize student learning experiences.

Soil-water-rock interactions I: The pediment problem
Mark Strudley
You may have not initially appreciated that piedmonts (landscapes between steep mountain masses and depositional basins) are not all covered by alluvial fans. In fact, piedmonts, along with adjoining low-relief ...

Soil-water-rock interactions II: The formation of tors in arid and semiarid environments
Mark Strudley
The prominence of bedrock edifices above essentially featureless, erosional pediment surfaces underscores the crux of the 'pediment problem' that has baffled geologists since 1877(described in the Part I ...

Natural tree death, forest harvest, changes in hillslope hydrology, and implications to slope stability
Adelaide vignette Johnson
Death of trees by either forest harvest or by natural forest decline may result in increases in soil saturation, flooding, and landslides. These geomorphic processes, potentially differing in frequency and ...

Sediment Entrainment and Channel Lifetimes in Braided Streams
allen hunt
Braided streams are typically found on steep slopes (high energy environments) with an abundance of sediment. Their channels are constantly choking up with sediments and shifting. This gives rise to the concept of ...

The role of hydraulics in fine-grained sedimentation within river channels: an example from the Ovens River, Australia
Geoff Vietz
River channels contain sediment deposits such as bars and benches which provide important ecological habitat for fish, macroinvertebrates and riparian and aquatic vegetation. Bars and benches influence flow to ...

When a tree falls in the forest, does it make a soil?
Emmanuel Gabet
When a Tree Falls Over A tree, like most plants, sends roots down into soil and bedrock to absorb water and nutrients. The roots also anchor the tree to the ground and prevents it from tipping over. Strong wind ...

Topographic signatures of lithologies in the Modi Khola valley of central Nepal
Lisa Walsh, University of Maryland-College Park
Rock resistivity to erosion plays a vital role in the evolution of the Earth's topography. Since different rock types exhibit different levels of resistivity to erosion, the more resistant rock types tend to ...

Digital Topography: Should you choose a TIN or raster interpolation of the landscape?
Lisa Walsh, University of Maryland-College Park
The recent explosion of Geographic Information System (GIS) tools enable geoscientists to visualize the Earth's surface in three dimensions using digital topography. Digital topography can be represented in ...

Tillage erosion in developing countries in Asia
ALAN ZIEGLER
Tillage erosion, which is the net redistribution of soil within the landscape as a result of farming activities, is one of the most important soil degradation processes on sloping croplands world-wide (Govers et ...

Cosmogenic nuclide inventories of river sediments reveal the geomorphic character of their source areas
Alexandru T Codilean
The realization that surface processes can play a key role in moderating tectonics, and possibly climate (Molnar & England, 1990; Raymo & Ruddiman, 1992; see also Bishop 2007) has meant that there is now a ...
