Goal for day 2: Complete hands on section and narrative; allow group to discuss citizen science

Session 1: 9:30 – 10:45

  • Discuss ground observation; decide what can reasonably be done
  • Discuss data sharing; provide suggestions for what data could be shared and how
  • Discuss links to satellite analysis
  • Define the narrative for the chapter, "why citizen science"

Precipitation measurements vary greatly over spatial (space) and temporal (time) resolutions. Satellites provide large amounts of information regarding daily and monthly precipitation patterns over a large scale, while ground-based measurements provide point-source validation for the satellite measurements. Together, these measurements of precipitation provide a more powerful database than either can alone. These measurements can then be used to understand local control over regional responses, such as flooding of a major river as a result of rainfall amounts upstream.

How Citizen Scientists Can Meaningfully Contribute to the Question Using their Own Observations and Satellite Data

The spatial distribution of ground-based stations creates limits on the level of understanding that can be gained on local controls of precipitation.  Through taking measurements of precipitation in their own back yards and then comparing their measurements to other ground-based and satellite-based measurements, citizen scientists can contribute to the overall understanding of locally-controlled precipitation related phenomena.

Measurements from rain gauges in an area differ from one another, and few  align with the rain estimates coming from TRMM. Why?

  • Discuss data sharing; provide suggestions for what data could be shared and how; define exactly what measurements a citizen would have to make to produce meaningful data.
  • List supplies needed for ground activity and where to find them

Session 3: 2:00 – 3:45

  • Write procedure
  • Identify related reading and background material
  • Create powerpoint slides, prepare presentation with 4 slides:
    • Slide one: Activity name and team members
    • Slide two: data used
    • Slide three: short description of ground activity
    • Slide four: short description of satellite activity

4:00 – 5:00    Report out (each group gets 5-10 minutes to present their 4 slides)
