AIDS in Sub-Sahara Africa: A Detailed Examination of Botswana, Swaziland, South Africa and Uganda

This module is intended to introduce students to one of the greatest social problems to face this planet, the global epidemic of HIV/AIDS and to increase their computer and research skills within sociology.

Learning Goals

Upon completion of this module the learner will:
  • Be able to locate Botswana, Swaziland, South Africa, Uganda, and Lesotho on a map.
  • Understand the key concepts and terminology used in the module.
  • Be able to read and interpret data, graphs, epidemiological. information and demographic information.
  • Increase general education requirements of critical thinking, writing, and verbal communication.
  • Use computer literacy skills to effectively use the world wide web for analysis of the problem of HIV/AIDs.
  • Develop an understanding of the micro, middle and macro causes ,consequences and cures of HIV/AIDS in Africa.
  • Develop a sociological understanding of HIV/AIDS.
  • Increase knowledge and awareness of HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Context for Use

This exercise was designed for a sociology course. Students will watch a video, analyze AIDS data from African countries and see how AIDS affects other aspects of the specified country, and finally complete a project in which students use data to offer potential solutions to the crisis.
