Putting Census Data to Work
This module introduces students to using census data through three distinct scenarios: grocery store chains, anti-poverty programs, and bookstores.

Census Data and Luxury Lane
For this assignment, students will pretend to be a social researcher hired by the developers of Luxury Lane, a high end shopping plaza featuring gourmet cuisine, custom furniture, designer clothing, and expensive artwork. They will determine (1) if they should consider placing their shopping area in Ohio or another state, and (2) if they choose Ohio, whether they should choose Cleveland or another city.

The Social Structures of the Cities
Objectives of this first data exercise are: to discover how the present-day US population is distributed across these various census categories; to discover how the distribution has changed over time; and, to see how some of the social characteristics of people who live in cities, suburbs and non-metro areas.

Florida Cities and Metro Areas
In addition to the raw data files that you analyzed in Module One, the US Census makes a great deal of information about cities (and everything else) available through its various publications. Our learning objective in Module Two is to familiarize students with these data resources and their contents by retrieving information on various Florida cities and metropolitan areas.
