Summary

In the introduction to chemistry this is used to help students draw a two dimensional image of the atom.

Learning Goals

Students should be able to read an element box from the periodic table and then draw the corresponding atom.

Context for Use

This is a whole class activity led by the teacher at a smart board as students begin to understand the basic concepts. They should then take over the smart board and fill in the answers for the first 12 atoms on the periodic table.

Description and Teaching Materials

Intro the periodic table, review what each box contains, and then introduct how to diagram a two dimensional rendition of an atom. Drawing Atoms (Smart Board activity) ( 149kB Aug25 09)

Teaching Notes and Tips

You should use this as a quick review of what is found on the periodic table. Then go on to show how to diagram an atom.

Assessment

This is an introductory step. Assessment is determind by the students ability to draw atoms.

Standards

7.2.1.1.1
2. Physical Science,
1. Matter,
1. The idea that matter is made up of atoms and molecules provides the basis for understanding the properties of matter.

Recognize that all substances are composed of one or more of approximately one hundred elements and that the periodic table organizes the elements into groups with similar properties.
