Thjs lesson is for 3-5 graders. The first activity will last about 30 minutes. The concluding activity will be making a popcan fishing rod and going to the river to fish!
This could be adapted for ice fishing as well but would need community volunteers to master that!

Description and Teaching Materials

Lesson will be introduced by showing a mounted walley, sunfish and northern,.
Prior knowledge will be addressed.

1. Divide class into groups - give Fish Families Sheet and Fish Families Cards
2. Discuss the Fish Families Sheet. The five important game fish families in MN
3. Have groups sort the pictures into the five family groups based on characteristics listed. Ask students to write the names of each fish under the appropriate heading on the worksheet.
4. After each group is finished, ask the group to explain why they sorted the fish as they did. Compare and discuss the different grouping systems.
5. Ask the students to choose a fish from the Fish Families Sheet and as a class identify the family into which most scientists have classified that fish.
6. Continue working through the Fish Families Sheet as a class by identifying the family group of each fish on the sheet.

Teaching Notes and Tips

This lesson should be enjoyed by all.
Invite a taxidermist in to talk about his job and fish mounts. A DNR officer would be another great speaker, as well as parents that have been on fishing trips and caught big fish.
The pop can fishing pole is very easy to assemble.
Tape and tie the fishing line around the tab on the top and wrap around the can to prevent from tangling.

Assessment

Students will be assessed by oral evaluations of groups they arranged and classified the fish pictures.
Students will draw a picture of their fish.
