Precision in Measurement - Finding When an Object Changes Color part of MnSTEP Teaching Activity Collection:MnSTEP Activity Mini-collection
This inquiry activity is designed to have students measure when a mood object (pencil or straw that changes color with temperature) changes color. They can than report on their precision, accuracy, margin of error, degree of uncertainty, and level of confidence in their answer.

HYDROGEN-OXYGEN ROCKETS part of MnSTEP Teaching Activity Collection:MnSTEP Activity Mini-collection
During this activity students build a plastic pipette rocket. The first concept will to learn how igniting varying mixtures of hydrogen and oxygen will affect how far the rocket will fly. Second students will observe and manipulate variables to better understand the fundamental chemistry concepts: principles of combustion reactions, kinetics, stoichiometry, gas mixtures, rocketry, and different types of chemical reactions. Finally, students will assess their own understanding of these chemistry concepts by investigating how NASA scientists launch real rockets into space. One follow-up activity would be to investigate and collect data on a launching a heavier object at the school football field.

This lesson has students solving the mystery of a note by conducting chromatography. They will test different washable markers and see that different marker colors are made up of various pigments. They will compare and contrast the note chromatography with other chromatography results from a variety of markers.

Short Description: This activity is a daily lab where two students read a thermometer and identify the cloud type for a week. They record it on the board first and we all record it in our journals. A graph of the entire year is also completed and we can analyze the data as we go. We get two new "scientists" each week and we do it all year. I start the first week of school.
