Summary

Use the web game Climate Challenge by the British Broadcasting Corporation to observe how decision by government can contribute to climate change.

By seeing the consequence of government inaction in an interactive web experience, students will be more engaged citizens and voters.

To show students that we live in a world with finite resources.

Learning Goals

1. To increase students' awareness of how government policy affects climate change.

2. Show students what happens when climate change is not addressed

Context for Use

This assignment can be used for a bioethics class or any political science class.

Description and Teaching Materials


1. Go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/hottopics/climatechange/climate_challenge/

2. If you don't have the latest version of flash player use the hyperlink on the site.

3. Click on the open icon below the picture

4. Go through the tutorial

5. Start the game & choose the "cards" that are the worst for the environment. Write down the results from the events, newspaper & political poll.

6. Play the game at least twice more and pick different "cards". Write down the "cards" you choose and make sure to mark the differences. Be sure to also write down the financial cost and the amount of material used.

7. Review the differences

8. Choose the best scenario and write a 500 word essay on how the world would be different and how to implement the scenario.

9. Have a discussion forum in class. Split students into groups and discuss. Have each group present the best scenario and how it can be implemented.


Teaching Notes and Tips

Ask students to write a first draft of their essay and hand it in. Have the student work with a partner to revise the essay. A civic engagement assignment enhancement is to formulate an email to share with a community decision maker about options to address climate change.

Assessment

Students should play the game at least 3 times to get adequate results. If they don't find significant differences then they can write their essay on what their best scenario would be and how to implement it.
