Heather was a one-year Postdoctoral Fellowship at SERC following a one-year position as Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology at Carleton College, where I participated in both teaching and supervision of undergraduate research, developed courses, designed interdisciplinary learning activities, and gained valuable feedback on my teaching from students and colleagues.
My interest in science education is grounded in my resolute belief that all students, whether pursuing careers in science or not, reap many benefits from being scientifically literate. Science literacy can enhance ones appreciation of the natural phenomena encountered daily. On a more practical level, effective science education allows individuals to develop informed views on health, environmental, and technological issues.
At SERC, my responsibilities included highlighting effective courses and programs to support of the Preparing Teachers to Teach Earth Science site and creating DataSheets that facilitate teaching and learning with data, as part of the Using Data in the Classroom Portal.
