What if college laboratory courses reflected what students would actually experience in graduate school or as research scientists, and weren't just weekly exercises to questions that have already been answered? Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology at Middle Tennessee State University R. Drew Sieg partnered with the Murfreesboro Greenway System to give his Honors Ecology students research experience in a real topic of local concern.
New Award Recognizing Exemplary Regional Collaborations Honors Hawai'i Team

We find ourselves inspired to create a new award program that acknowledges and honors exemplary multi-institutional, regional, or statewide work around compelling civic issues. The first recipient of this new award is a team from Hawai'i. While considering their work, it became clear that their actions and accomplishments seem best suited to be recognized by an honor that acknowledges quality of the inter-institutional collaborations and deep partnerships established to improve the quality of both formal and informal education.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology at Middle Tennessee State University R. Drew Sieg describes teaching introductory biology through authentic research experiences tied to the Small World Initiative. His work is inspired by the high rate of students who drop out of STEM majors after taking introductory science courses. By replacing cookie-cutter lab courses with authentic research, Drew increases student engagement, and the likelihood of students graduating with a STEM degree.
NCSCE Grants 25 Implementation Awards for Projects that Reform STEM Education, Increase Community Engagement, and Build Civic Capacity

NCSCE awarded 25 SSI 2014 Post-Institute Implementation Awards that promote student engagement with STEM education, civic issues, and community outreach. The Implementation Awards, made possible through the National Science Foundation, are designed to support innovative projects that incorporate SENCER Ideals into undergraduate and graduate education. The 2014 awards sponsor projects that make STEM more accessible to women, minorities, and students in small, rural schools; reform institutional core curricula to broaden the scope of central, civic issues; and involve students in community-based research. Project themes include Mars exploration, sustainability and urbanization, stormwater runoff, assisted reproductive technologies, genetically modified organisms, the history and practice of science, and more. Projects were selected following a competitive review process.

Gary Booth, professor of plant and wildlife science at Brigham Young University, and The Core Interdisciplinary Team from the United States Military Academy at West Point have been selected as this year's recipients of the William E. Bennett Award for Extraordinary Contributions to Citizen Science.

Hamilton College in Clinton, NY and the Green Science Policy Institute (GSP) in Berkeley, CA have partnered to develop toxicology research opportunities for undergraduates that meld with public policy and civic engagement. Last academic year, Drs. Tim Elgren and Arlene Blum, along with Ms. Avery Lindeman of GSP, expanded Dr. Elgren's existing Hamilton College Introduction to Chemistry course into a toxicology lab with elements of civic engagement to provide students with opportunities to share their research with the public.

Recently, 'Harbor Happenings,' a magazine published by the Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program, featured an article on a student project that involves the creation of a GIS (geographic information systems) map of the Corkscrew watershed that works with smartphones as part of Environmental Biology: Ecosystems of Southwest Florida.

The most recent additions to the SENCER Digital Library are the seven courses and programs selected to be part of the SENCER Model Series during the summer of 2008. The diverse group of resources includes international collaborations, single courses, and course clusters, and focuses on issues such as sleep, HIV/AIDS, food, and pregnancy.
