SCI-Midwest Symposium Highlights

Roosevelt University hosted the March 8, 2014 SCI-Midwest symposium, which focused on "Teaching College Science and Math Through Themes of Food, Health and Sustainability Themes."

Keynote speakers Howard Rosing of DePaul University and Mike Bryson of Roosevelt University shared their findings on food equity and sustainability practices within the Chicago metropolitan area. Coming from backgrounds in the social sciences and humanities, both speakers offered a view of civic engagement in STEM courses that is based on cultural and historical considerations as well as on student learning outcomes and community need.

Over 60 attendees from Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Minnesota and even Alaska presented their work on teaching through topics ranging from prairie restoration to aquaponics to nutrition-related disease.
