Are there issues with growing student familiarity/expectations with commercial games where they often spend 10's of millions of dollars on eye-candy and polish?

Can educational games continue as a separate thread or will we be obliged to ride coat-tail on the commercial tools in order to not fall behind technically?]]>

I like your approach. How much updating is required to keep the game "fresh" ? Is there a problem with institutional memory among the students ? Do they share with their colleagues the best way to do something ?
