RE Time series figure: The letters A, B, C aren't locked in the right place in my version. You might want to use different shapes instead of different colors (or in addition to) to help out students who can't see red vs green, or instructors who can't print in color. This would go for the map above then, too. Above this figure, you have "GPs" instead of "GPS."

You already mentioned that you could switch some of these to short answer. You could also add some follow up short answers (ex "Why?") in a few places to help check the students' understanding and their reasoning process.

Cool animation! I had to re-save it with ".mpg" at the end of the file name to get Quicktime to realize it was a movie file.

The way you have this set up now, it would also work really well as an online assignment or "web exploration" style activity, with the multiple choice in Blackboard or Moodle. Could have students search the NEIC catalog for recent earthquake in that area, etc.]]>

Including a comparison of energy release between the two events would be cool as well.

I think ETS is an amazing discovery and one that could get my PacNW students motivated.]]>

Overall the class seemed to enjoy the activity and those that finished in the 30-40 minutes I gave them did quite well on it: average of 31/32 correct. It certainly suggests that I could go more in the open-ended why direction that you all suggested, so I will keep working on that version of this activity. The key moment in class today came when a student asked how we know there was a magnitude ~9 earthquake back in 1700. My first thought was, wow that's a good question, something must be working. My second thought was that I should give them a reading assignment associated with this in-class activity: there is a section of the new "The Good Earth" textbook by McConnell et al., called "The Science of Ghost Forests and Megathrust Earthquakes" which talks about figuring out this out. An alternative would be the USGS book "The Orphan Tsunami of 1700". ]]>

This is a great idea, having students work with real data (GPS, seismic, etc.) to understand this debated topic. So that this exercise does not feel too much like an exam, perhaps there should be additional components that do not emphasize multiple choice questions. The questions are good, but some more free-form activity would enrich this exercise.]]>
