This is a review article about the role of lateral gene transfer in eukaryotic evolution. It was published in 2002 and provides good perspective on ideas that had/were changing at the time of publication. Topics covered include methods for identifying lateral gene transfer events, the chimeric nature of eukaryotic genomes, the timing of acquisition of mitochondria, hypotheses about the origins of eukaryotes, and finally, nine case studies of lateral gene transfers in eukaryotes. This paper would be appropriate for advanced undergraduate and graduate student, or as an update/background for teachers.
