This press release from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center details new research on satellite data. The data collected by the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission show that the extra heat retained by hard surfaces in urban areas can cause more rain to fall adjacent to urban centers than would be expected. The page also includes a number of data visualizations and short quicktime movies illustrating the heat island concept and the reported research results.
