This is a review article by Dr. Laura Katz published in Trends in Ecology and Evolution. This article describes the chimeric nature of eukaryotic genomes and defining features of eukaryotic cells, and assesses which features can be explained by various existing theories of eukaryotic origins. The author assumes some prior knowledge of the theories being discussed. There is an extensive bibliography with links to many of the cited references.
