http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4726890

This rado broadcast discusses the mission of the U.S. Forest Service, which now includes increasing amounts of research. The broadcast features interviews with scientists who work at the Forest Service's Wind River Experimental Forest in Washington state. They use a 25-story tall construction crane to study the organisms that live at different tree heights, examine foliage and take samples, place carbon monoxide monitoring devices, and to study the the top canopy of trees where most new growth occurs. Their work is increasing understanding of the carbon cycle of old growth forests and the value of these old trees to the ecosystem in the face of climate change, and leading to better management of forests. The broadcast is 8 minutes and 35 seconds in length.
