Pulse of the Planet

This two-minute sound segment, a biologist relates the plight of the marmot due to global warming. He explains that they are now emerging over a month earlier than they used to, and that they have to spend most of that time waiting for the snow to melt. These animals have not eaten for eight months and winter starvation is one of the major causes of mortality in marmots. So if this interval between the time they emerge and the time there is something green for them to eat keeps increasing, they are going to run even more risk of starvation in the future. This site is from an archive of a daily radio program called Pulse of the Planet which provides its listeners with a portrait of Planet Earth, tracking the rhythms of nature, culture and science worldwide and blending interviews and extraordinary natural sound. The site also provides a written transcript of the broadcast.
