Virginia Institute of Marine Science, Sea Grant Marine Advisory Services

This data tip from Bridge, the Ocean Sciences Education Teacher Resource Center archive, teaches about the seafloor using data from the seafloor observatory set up at Axial Volcano, in the Northeast Pacific, 240 miles off the Oregon coast. It includes a variety of educational sites to visit, and a data exercise on topographic mapping of the seafloor based on NOAA/National Geophysical Data Center data. Students can create a three-dimensional representation of the underwater landscape and investigate the bizarre environment of hydrothermal vents, black smokers, tube worms, and other thermophiles. An Oregon teacher accompanied scientists on a research trip, and has provided photos and reports.
