The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) helps developing countries find solutions to their population problems. This 2001 report elucidates the links between population and environment, detailing interrelations between factors such as affluence, consumption, technology, and population growth, as well as previously ignored or underrated social concerns such as gender roles and relations, political structures, and governance at all levels. Environmental trends covered include the effects of water availability and quality on population; food security issues; greenhouse gas emissions and climate change; and forests, habitat and biodiversity. Health issues covered include reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, heavy metals, nuclear contamination, and biodiversity loss. An appendix covers global agreements, treaties, and world conferences on the above issues.
