This NRCS site provides profiles of characteristic soils from every state. Text on the site provides an explanation of soil horizons in general and how they form, as well as the definition of what constitutes an official state soil. A list of states contains linked PDF documents that feature a photograph of the soil profile, a map of the geographic distribution, and a description of soil characteristics for each state.
