This web page discusses Cyanobacteria, or blue green algae, and associated environmental and health impacts. Similar to the marine algal blooms, cyanobacteria periodically grow exuberantly. These blooms can cause significant environmental impact due to the decrease in oxygen in the water, resulting in the die-off of fish and other organisms. Furthermore, these blue green algal blooms can produce significant quantities of natural toxins. This page explores the toxins, recorded animal and human outbreaks, treatment, prevention and control, and a bibliography.
