Research on conceptual understanding in mechanics
L.C. McDermott 1984 Physics Today v37(7), p24-34

This paper discusses research on the learning and teaching of some basic physics mechanics concepts. Several specific examples from representative investigations are presented in order to illustrate the nature and scope of this type of research. Implications of this research for instruction are also discussed.
