Fieldwork in Geography Teaching: a critical review of the literature and approaches
M. Kent, D. Gilbertsone, and C. Hunt 1997 Journal of Geography in Higher Education 21(3), 313-332

This review of geography fieldwork pedagogy draws from various scientific literature mostly relating to the United Kingdom. It assesses the traditional conduct of geography fieldwork by discussing, among other things, three general categories of fieldwork objectives; subject-specific objectives, transferable enterprise skills, and socialization and personal development. It also discusses structures for teaching in the field and offers suggestions for improving fieldwork-related methodologies.
