Workshops and Workshop Reports
The 2006 DLESE Data Services Workshop was held May 15-17, 2006 at the Westward Look Resort in Tucson, Arizona. The workshop provided an opportunity for data providers, analysis tool developers, scientists, curriculum developers, and educators to interact with one another in a variety of sessions, all working toward the goal of facilitating the use of data in education.
DLESE Data Services Workshop: New England Center at the University of New Hampshire, May 24-27, 2004. Data providers, tool developers, scientists, curriculum developers and educators will work together to inform each other of their respective groups' interests and needs with regard to data access. Through several breakout sessions, small groups will begin development of educational modules that use data and tools.
NAGT Using Global Data Sets in Teaching Earth Processes Workshop: Held prior to the Fall AGU meeting December 2002, this one-day workshop focused on pedagogical approaches, tools and technologies, evaluation strategies, and other issues and factors in using global data sets with students. The complete program and presentations are available on the website.
NSDL Using Data in the Classroom Workshop: This workshop in April, 2002 brought together 20 faculty from across the STEM disciplines to better define why, how, and to what effect they use data in the classroom. A report, Using Data in Undergraduate Science Classrooms (Acrobat (PDF) 467kB Nov25 03), summarizes the workshop outcomes.
Projects
DLESE Data Access Working Group (DAWG): This working group has formed to develop access and tools to support student exploration of data through DLESE . Reinvigorated in Fall 2003, the group is chaired by Bruce Caron and is now focuses on facilitating discovery and use of geoscience data.
DLESE For Educators: Teaching with Data: This site provides an overview of DLESE services for educators teaching with data.
Earth Exploration Toolbook provides step-by-step instructions and case studies for using Earth science datasets and software tools in educational settings.
Starting Point: Teaching Entry Level Geoscience provides examples and help for faculty and graduate students teaching entry level undergraduate courses including special sections on Teaching with Data and Teaching with Models.
