Greetings-
We are looking forward to having you all here on Thursday!

I believe that you all have information on how to get from the airport to
Carleton. We are placing a copy of the file that tells who is riding with
whom and when you all arrive on the logistics page of the website. If you
have any questions please contact Patt Germann (pgermann at serc.carleton.edu)

The weather forecast is for highs in the 30's and lows in the 20's. I am
sorry to disappoint everyone who wanted to experience Minnesota winter with
highs below zero. We have about 6 inches of snow--so it is a bit sloppy.
The forecast for Saturday calls for "winter mix" which is the local lingo
for mixed rain, sleet and snow. So, shoes that are comfortable on wet and
possible slightly slushy sidewalks are good; a coat is good; you can manage
without a hat and mittens in this --but you'll be more comfortable walking
around if you have them. We have lots of cars to drive people back and
forth if you are uncomfortable with either the cold or the snow. A good
strategy would be to find out if your driver from the airport is going to
drive over for the opening session. It is about 4 blocks from the hotel to
the alumni guest house and there will be maps in your registration packet
which will be waiting for you at the hotel.

Many thanks to the 20 of you who have submitted essays. I hope that all of
you will submit an essay before 2:00 tomorrow. John will make the final
pdf file for download at this time. I suspect many particpants will read
these on the plane on their way out--you don't want to be missing from
these written introductions. Something short is better than nothing at all!

With respect to posters. Several of you have uploaded posters. I've done
printing for Peter Guth and Bob Filson. If anyone else needs me to print
an 11 x 17 poster please let me know. You can upload your poster to the
website anytime. We will keep adding them to the participants page as we
receive them.

For those of you who would like a recommendation for plane reading beyond
the essays, I will make a page on the website under research with some
suggestions and their pdf files. Look for that tomorrow. While you are on
the site, I hope you will check out the resources we have put together on
research, creating visualizations, and for teaching. These are still very
much prototypes. We hope that you will help us build these further both
while you are at the workshop and after. Your comments are welcome (please
send them to me). If you have ideas for visualizations, references or
tools that we should feature, please submit them using the contribute
resources pages.

Looking forward. Don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions.

Cathy
