Hello all,
Some folks have asked about the details of internet connectivity during
the workshop. Here's the scoop. The majority of the sessions will take
place in the Alumni Guest House on campus. This building is on the campus
ethernet and we will be augmenting the ethernet ports in the rooms with
some additional hubs so there should be a fair number of ethernet ports
available. If you plan on needing internet connectivity (for a
presentation or such) you'll want to bring a laptop with an ethernet port.
We'll have some ethernet cables on hand, but if you can bring your own it
will make things that much simpler.
As far as software setup, Carleton uses a very generic DHCP setup. If
your computer is setup to grab it's configuration via DHCP (which is the
'out-of-the-box' configuration for Macs and most networked PC's) things
should just work. If you're not clear on whether you have the right bits
you may want to confer with your local IT folks before coming out (the
information in this email should be sufficient for them to figure out
what's going on). There will be some tech folks on call (and probably
hovering) during the workshop so we can try to help if you run into
problems.
The hotel you'll be staying in has standard modem jacks so if you have a
phone cord/modem and an ISP (either one with a local 507 number, or one
you're willing to pay long distance charges to) you can connect from your
room in that way as well.
As with most college campuses there are a bevy of computer labs sprinkled
about if you need to sneak out to check your email at any point. Campus
computers require a local account to use but there's a 'friend' account you
can use--I'll have the current password available when you arrive.
Feel free to send any questions about any of this my way.
