[Petwksp] East Coast Petrology and Volcanology meetings

Hi all,
As I look to all of the meetings I'd like to attend, mostly on the
west coast, and think about field work and Carbon-footprint, I'm
inclined to feel a bit guilty about the amount of travel I do for my
work. And as I prioritize, I think for the most part I'd put doing
fieldwork ahead of going to conferences, although often that is a
difficult decision. However, whereas technology will one day let me
'attend' AGU sessions from the comfort of my Carlisle office, I'm
unlikely to be able to replace my main field areas with things that
are closer.
So I'd like to gage Eastern US interest in pet/volc and find (or help
to re-ignite??) slightly more local venues (at least compared to SF)
for meetings that are regular and more focused. Although Spring AGU
seems like it might be the easiest option, I've only been to one and
it didn't seem to be overrun with pet/volc types. Is this just a
matter of someone volunteering to organize a bit more? Or this there
a more fundmental problem with getting East Coast Pet/Volc people
together for Spring AGU?
The 2003 Teaching Pet Workshop still sticks in my mind as one of my
favorite conferences, and it would be nice to get together with a
group of people to talk about research and teaching more frequently
than once every 5 years...I'd love to go to the Houston GSA, but
that's still pretty far from PA...
If anyone else feels this way and is interested in trying to organize
something in the next year or so, please get in touch with me...
Cheers,
Ben
