From btewksbu at hamilton.edu Thu Jul 3 10:58:09 2008 From: btewksbu at hamilton.edu (Barbara Tewksbury) Date: Thu, 03 Jul 2008 11:58:09 -0400 Subject: [Petwksp] Workshop at GSA on Teaching Petrology and Structural Geology Message-ID: <486CF711.7040806@hamilton.edu> Hi folks, As you are registering for the GSA meeting in Houston, don't miss the Saturday workshop "Teaching Petrology and Structural Geology in the 21st Century" (Short Course #519). This workshop will be a follow-on to the highly successful 2003 and 2004 On the Cutting Edge workshops on Teaching Petrology and Teaching Structural Geology in the 21st Century. Five years will have passed since these workshops, and we feel that the time is right to revisit the topics and bring together faculty who 1) have developed new resources as a result of having attended the first workshops or 2) were unable to attend the first workshops and would like to share their exemplary resources and engage in discussion of issues related to teaching these two disciplines at the undergraduate level. We are looking for participants who can share innovative and effective classroom, lab, field, or GIS activities or who have ways to integrate concepts from these two disciplines into courses taught in other areas of the undergraduate curriculum. This workshop will also provide an opportunity for discussing issues related to teaching the two disciplines. We hope that you'll sign up! It costs only $45, and that includes lunch! At the outset, the data will all be from published references, but the database will be editable by the community of petrographers, so that it can improve over time. Because the core system will be designed in the coming academic year (2008-2009), I am calling now for comments on the database design and search interface. By offering comments now, prior to the initiation of work, you can help this facility be more useful for your professional work, research, and teaching. A great deal more information, including a timeline, database fields, and a mock-up of the interface, is available here: http://almandine.geol.wwu.edu/~dave/petsearch/ I hope you are willing to take a moment to examine this and consider whether the design is optimal for your use. Furthermore, I hope you will offer comments as to whether and how such a facility would be useful for you (such comments might be used in funding requests).
