Dear Colleagues,
We would like to call your attention to a new set of web-based
instructional modules on Geochemical Instrumentation and Analysis:
http://serc.carleton.edu/research_education/geochemsheets/index.html
The purpose of this site is to introduce the arsenal of analytical
techniques commonly used in mineralogy, petrology and geochemistry to
students and other novices to help them be "critical consumers and
producers of geochemical data". For each instrument, we present a brief
description of the instrument, theory and fundamental principles, a
description of how the instrument works, instrument components, typical
applications, a discussion of relative strengths and limitations,
information about sample collection and preparation, data collection and
presentation of results, and recommended readings and links to other
sites to guide users to more comprehensive coverage of the topics. Where
available, we have also included instructional materials to use in your
classes (e.g. problem sets, lab activities). The ultimate goal of this
site is to help students attend a departmental seminar or read an
article in the literature and to be able to understand where data come
from, to understand the assumptions and limitations inherent in each
technique, and maybe even to ask an appropriate question about the
results.
I'd like to thank the many authors who contributed to these webpages.
If anyone would like to create additional modules on
instruments/techniques not already covered please contact me directly.
If you provide the basic text and a few figures (with captions and
permissions) I will do the follow-up formatting and posting to add to
this on-line collection. I have a few additional modules in production
(with volunteer authors), but if you are so motivated, please propose
additional modules to add to this collection.
Please don't forget about the related site on Teaching Phase Equilibria,
http://serc.carleton.edu/research_education/equilibria/index.html
And if you've considered using ruggedized computers in your field
teaching and research projects you might want to check out the modules
on Teaching with GeoPads
http://serc.carleton.edu/research_education/geopad/index.html
Comments, queries, corrections to any of these sites will be
appreciated. Please let me know if these are useful in your own
instructional activities.
Best to all, and Rock On!
